do i have to have strong hands to be a massage therapist? and how many semesters are there? thanks for your help!

Answers:

1You don't need super strong hands to be a massage therapist. When you go to school you will learn how to use body mechanics, in other words you use your whole body weight to apply the pressure you need in certain techniques. This way you also prevent repetitive injuries to yourself. The amount of semesters and overall time in school will greatly depend on the state that you live in. I live and practice in Pennsylvania, we do not have any certification or licensing from the state itself only through the school that we attend. My course was 6 months of education and 3 months of an internship at massage therapy center. I love that I can help people overcome chronic pain and injuries. My clients usually come to me as a last resort because nothing else has helped, a few of them actually cried afterward because the pain finally went away. My studies included anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, and studies in different massage techniques. You however must possess the following characteristics, a love of helping people, comfortable touching people, and joy of learning. You have to check out all the schools in your area and make sure that the education you recieve gives you what you need to pass any requirements from the state you live in. There is also a National Exam you can take to become nationally ceritifed. You must know that you will not leave school and immediately make a ton of money. You have to build up your clientele if you work on your own, if you work for someone else than you will not generally make even half the money (per client). In either case for me it was worth it! I love going to work.
